The importance of feeling your feelings

You can’t leave a place you’ve never been to. 

This is something that the brilliant psychologist Nathaniel Branden said. 

And when it comes to talking about feelings, I think this applies very well. To me the above statement means that if you don’t allow yourself to feel the feeling, you can’t expect to ever actually leave the feeling behind.

If you feel crap about what it is you’re thinking about, your relationship, for example… 

That is actually YOU who’s creating that. And the most important thing is that you feel good. When you feel good, you are connected with yourself; you are aligned with your neutral – your natural state.

Any other feeling is a signal guiding you back to what is good, like road signs.

So, let’s say you’re going to Spain from Mongolia by car, and you get to a fork in the road. 

On the left is Spain and on the right is Russia. 

And since you want to go to Spain, you should go left. Right?

Now, if you didn’t look at any of the road signs going from Mongolia to Spain, chances are you would get lost, you might not get there, or it would take you forever to get there.

It is the same principle that applies to your emotions. They’re not GOOD or BAD. They’re simply signals helping you navigate.

So it serves you to care about how you feel. When you do, you notice which direction to go.

“What if I ignore the road signs?”

“What if I’m not paying attention?”

Well, as Abraham Hicks would say, “Don’t worry, it will get worse.” 

And that is a good thing. Because it will wake you up and have you look for the signs.

Now, let’s go back to you feeling crap thinking about your relationship… 

Care about how you feel, and notice that you are feeling like crap. Then ask yourself, 

“What would make me feel better? 

“What would a wiser version of me do in this case?” 

See if any of these questions can help you start feeling better, if it will help you realign with your natural state of feeling good, with your true self. 

From there, go create what it is you want, rather than live with what you don’t want.
